Steve was admitted to the bar in 1974. Over his forty years practicing law, Steve has taken thousands of cases.  From running his own firm, to holding the office Director of Legal Training in the New Zealand Defence Force, Steve has diverse experience acting for the prosecution and defence, in civil matters, criminal (everything from murder to traffic offences), and employment and Family Court proceedings.  Steve is a former Law Society District president.

After a career in the military, which saw Steve deployed in East Timor and in the Solomon Islands, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea, and representing the NZDF in the Pike River Mine Royal Commission of Inquiry, Steve retired from the NZDF in 2012 and resumed private practice, establishing Heretaunga Law with Michael Bott and Stephen Iorns, later to be joined by Rod Mulgan and Geoff Fulton.

Since resuming private practice, Steve has taken instructions on matters ranging from courts martial, to criminal matters, to employment disputes, to Family Court proceedings, and everything in between.  He offers a depth and breadth of experience that his clients benefit from greatly.  In addition to the wealth of knowledge Steve brings to litigation, he is an accredited mediator.

"I want to single you out, Mr Taylor, for the way you have gone about your task. You have a client who is very vulnrable. On the one hand, you have been your client's advocate to act on her instructions. On the other hand, you have been there to support and advise. You have done it expertly. It is a lesson to others." - Judge P F Boshier, Wellington Family Court, Hearing 28-30 January 2013, Judgment 30 January 2013.
